Medicine Box Cannabis Medicine Bar Review

Medicine Box makes strain-specific products including chocolate truffles, tinctures and my favorite, the Medicine Bar. It’s a sweet nutty treat with the energizing effects I like.
Each bar contains 20mg of THC, so since I usually get the best effects from 10mg, I can get two doses out of one bar.

Medicine Box medicine bars

These are a hard, crunchy nut bar, so you do want to be careful if you are cutting them into pieces. Biting one in half isn’t too hard and I wouldn’t try to cut it into more than 4 pieces as it could start to fall apart. If you are new to this edible, do start with cutting it into 4 pieces and try a 5mg dose first. Wait 2 hours to judge the effects then try more if you want a stronger effect.

I love this bar because it not only tastes great, Medicine Bar gives me strain-specific effects from the Sativa strain Sour Diesel. Sour Diesel aka Sour D is used to make the cannabis oil that goes into the bars. Sour D has a very energizing and focusing effect that helps power me through chores, housework or a hike in the woods. Add to that they are  handmade in California’s Sierra Mountains and vegan, it adds up to a winning cannabis edible.

Medicine Box ingredients

For fans of smoky flavors, the Smoked Almond bar has almonds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds. The Curry bar is spiced with classic curry spices, cashews, pistachios and chickpeas. My personal favorite is the Spiced Peanut bar, since I like spicy food, peanuts  and pumpkin seeds.

I have found these to be one of the most energetic of the edibles I have tried. Happy, uplifting and energetic are all appropriate to describe the effects.

Like many edibles producers, they have had to rework their packaging to comply with the new rules for edibles in California. While they are currently dealing with meeting the new packaging and licensing requirements, they are alive and well.

Zendo Cannabis Infused Almonds Review

I was given a sample size of Zendo Cannabis infused almonds. The small package contained 2 almonds and the package said approximately 3 mg per almond. These almonds were named as the best edible of 2017 by High Times. They are all natural and gluten free. Zendo also makes infused coconut oil and peanut butter.

I prefer it when edibles tell me what strain of cannabis was used to make the edible, or at least what type of cannabis (Indica or Sativa or dominant hybrid). The coconut oil and peanut butter are both labeled as being made with “Hybrid Strains” without saying if those strains are sativa- or indica- dominant or indicating what strains they are using. I could find nothing on their website that indicates what type or strain is used for the almonds.

Taste & Effect

They come in two flavors – Honey Cocoa & Spicy Sea Salt. I had the spicy sea salt and I appreciated the spiciness since I love heat. The almonds had a dark colored coating. Neither the sample packaging nor the website say what the ingredients are, which is not helpful for folks with allergies or who are trying to avoid certain ingredients.

The almonds effected me the same way I would expect a 6mg dose to. My usual dose is 10mg so this had me feeling a mild buzz, with surprisingly strong munchies for such an otherwise mild relaxed feeling. I didn’t find much energy, creativity or uplifted mood from it, just a low level buzz. Fortunately it did not give too much of the effects I expect from Indica strains, like foggy head or couch lock.

Overall I was not very impressed with either the effect or the amount of information given regarding strain used and ingredients. The taste was fine but most people do not choose edibles on taste alone.

Sweet Grass Cannabis Chocolate Chip Cookies Review

I was really excited about reviewing these edibles. I love a good cookie and one with THC included sounded perfect.

Sweet Grass Chocolate Chip Cookies come ten to a container. Each cookies has 10 mg of THC. Also available in a CBD formula.sweetgrass-choc-chip-cookies.jpeg

The cookies are small and each had a gelatin THC sticker to comply with government regulations. They were fresh with no medicinal taste. There weren’t a lot of chips. Sweet Grass cookies tasted like a product from an airport vending machine, ok, but not great. Definitely well paired with milk.

They suggest that you pop them in the microwave for a minute to help with taste and texture.

An hour and a half after eating the Chocolate Chip Cookies I started to feel the buzz. My head felt heavy and I became more lethargic. I just wanted to relax and put my feet up.

Then the high started to fade away and then come back. It was not a consistent stoned feeling.

The high lasted on and off for an hour and a half.

Sweet Grass Chocolate Chip Cookies are a decent marijuana edible. The buzz was good but inconsistent. I will finish the container so as not to waste a THC product, but probably will not buy this product again.

Altus Labs Sativa Cannabis THC 10mg Pills Review

Altus pills provides cannabis in pill form with no flavorings, similar to aspirin or other medicine that comes in pill form. They come in Sativa, Indica and CBD formulas. The Indica and Sativa are available in 5mg pills and they have a variety of THC/CBD blends.

After testing with half of my usual dose of 10mg – an essential with any new cannabis edible – and feeling no adverse effects, later that week I tried a full dose. I tried a 10mg Sativa pill at 3pm on a Friday afternoon after work, when I wanted some energy, focus and creativity as I prepared dinner and did some cooking for the weekend. I had a late lunch, so my stomach had food on it. I took it with some caffeine and some water, since I usually take pills with water and take some caffeine when I use edibles.

Altus 10mg pills

My initial experience was a strange mix of feeling that it was too strong and feeling slightly nauseous to then feeling that it wasn’t very strong at all. It may be down to the blends they use in their hash oil, but I felt effects different from what I usually experience in edibles. There was strong focus and some energy effect. I also experienced what felt like a testosterone boost, what I imagine “roid rage” (from the use of steroids) to be. Feelings of anger and aggression went along with the energy and focus, even though there was nothing externally impacting my emotions. I did not experience as much of the heightened senses that I usually experience with visuals, sounds, smells and tastes.

I was able to cook with a pretty clear head thanks to the focus, but the anger and aggression were unpleasant, as was the nausea. The effects started to fade about 5 hours, so it lasted what is usual length for me. Overall it did feel energetic, but with too sharp an edge for me. When I’ve tried it again since, I get the same unusual effect, feeling easy to anger and on edge. I get none of the usual pleasant positive energy I usually get from a Sativa edible. I’m not sure what causes this effect but it is most unpleasant for me.

As of 2020, Altus products are only available in Colorado and Nevada.

Cheeba Chews Indica 70mg/ 100mg Review

I’ve been struggling to find a strong edible that doesn’t taste “weedy”. My favorite budtender recommended Cheba Chews in the 70mg pack. It comes in Sativa and Indica specific strains. I bought a couple of Indica packs and was very excited to try them.

After opening the package, I saw that there were two, 35mg doses. I eyeballed my dose to be close to 50mg and ate it.

CheebaChew CO MED 70mg IndicaThe Cheba Chew tasted exactly like a Tootsie Roll with no pot taste at all! It was pleasantly surprising. The effects were starting to be noticeable after 15 minutes. In a half an hour, I was really stoned. I was active in the beginning, but pretty quickly, I had to sit down and enjoy the buzz.

Cheba Chews gave me serious munchies. So be prepared! Have some of your favorite, healthy snacks ready before you enjoy this.

The effects started to wear off at the 3 1/2 hours mark.

I would definitely buy Cheba Chews again and I highly recommend it. Next time I visit my favorite dispensary, I’ll pick up more and try some of their Sativa strain too.

Note: The original review was written in 2017. In 2019, Cheeba Chews let us know that “these  babies are 100mg medical dose now!”. That’s why the title is 70mg/100mg.

Papa & Barkley Cannabis Transdermal Patches Review

Prior to the legalization of cannabis in California in January 2018, the only brand of transdermal patches available in the local Northern California dispensary was Papa & Barkley. We have tried several of their formulations, including the CBD, the 3:1 (THC:CBD) and the 1:3 (THC:CBD). We have also tried Mary’s Medicinals patches in the CBD,  Sativa, Indica, and CBN formulas.

Read our Introduction to Transdermal Patches and our Review of Mary’s CBN Patch.

We are not a fan of Papa & Barkley’s (P&B) products based on our experience of their product quality, formulation and effects.

Unlike Mary’s, several times the P&B patches come out of the package discolored and sometimes the back of the patch is sticky as if the medicine had seeped out from the sticky layer. Maybe this is from improper handling, maybe they got hot and melted or leaked, but we never experienced this with Mary’s. In this image you can see how the patch is discolored.

Papa & Barkley use camphor and menthol in their formulations. I recently used a patch of theirs and the smell of camphor was so sickeningly strong it gave me a headache. My skin is not oversensitive generally, but after wearing the patch for little over an hour, I had to take it off as it was creating a painful burning sensation. Even after taking it off, hours later I still smelled like camphor.

I’m very sensitive to the sedating, relaxing and sometimes sleepy effects of Indica. Papa & Barkley don’t indicate if their THC is Sativa or Indica, so you are rolling the dice if you are sensitive to one or the other, or if you are looking for a specific effect. We did not like the THC effects of the patch, it felt too much like an Indica-type feeling of lethargy. Creating formulas that are Indica or Sativa specific is much more helpful to people looking to use the products to different effects.

While I am a fan of patches, the uneven quality, strong unpleasant smell, and the lack of Indica/Sativa specific formulas makes Papa & Barkley a product I am not in a hurry to use again.
