Atlas Origin Indica Cannabis Edibles Review

By Ruth

When my favorite friend in the whole, wide world, Alton, gives me a cannabis edible to try, I get excited. We live far apart and use different dispensaries that carry very different products. His cannabis purchases are always diverse and the edibles are usually leaning towards the healthier and more gourmet end of the spectrum. I look forward to visiting my friend to catch up and to try his next goodie. It’s a wonderful, happy time.

Atlas Indica OriginThis time Alton shared Origin Mexican Chocolate & Pepita clusters. These clusters come in eight servings, each 10mg doses per bag. When I first started eating the clusters all I could taste were the oats and seeds (pumpkin and hemp). Then, I focused on the hint of dark chocolate. There’s a vague cannabis taste. These clusters are flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg and chili. Sadly, I had flashbacks to the hard, dry, Nature Valley granola bars. That is not a compliment.

After 50 minutes the effects of Origin Mexican Chocolate Pepitas started taking effect. A relaxing, calm feeling took care of my frazzled nerves. It was a very heady high, my head was tingling and had a floating sensation. At the same time, it was a very low energy, sit-on-the -couch-and-space high. There were no munchies.

The buzz lasted a little over 2 hours. It was a consistent, strong, high that left me sitting in the same spot feeling awesome.

Atlas Origin WithClusterOnce you get over the dryness of the product, Origin Mexican Chocolate Pepitas provide a strong, body high that is relaxing and enjoyable. Alton’s choice was fantastic. I’d definitely try these again and would recommend that you try them if you see them at your dispensary too!

Atlas Ember, Stratus & Nimbus Cannabis Edibles Review

By Alton

Atlas edibles are a hybrid of a granola bar, a fruit/oat bar and a cookie. They come in Sativa, Indica and two different Hybrid formulations. Each bag contains 80mg of THC. There are four pieces in each bag, each piece contains 20mg of THC. They are colorfully packaged, interestingly flavored and cleverly named.

Products

The two hybrid products are Stratus and Nimbus. Stratus promotes mindfulness & playfulness. It is flavored with lemon caramel, wild blueberries, poppy seeds and a hint of ginger. Nimbus is the other Hybrid flavor, having the same effects as Status but flavored with dark chocolate, hazelnuts, pecans and currants.

The Indica edible, which promotes relaxation, is flavored with Mexican chocolate, warm spices and pepitas (pumpkin seeds) and is called Origin. Click here for Ruth’s reviews of Origin.

Atlas Sativa Ember clusters

Ember edible

The Sativa edible is called Ember and it promotes functionality and creativity. It’s flavored with caramel, cayenne, toasted cashews and California apricots. If you are sensitive to spicy, don’t be put off because I love spicy and I hardly noticed any heat when I tried it, so it’s a mellow heat offset by the nuts and apricots. It is vegetarian and almost vegan (if your vegan eats honey) with the cannabis infused in coconut oil.

Ember has a pleasant oat bar/moist cookie taste with some crunch from the cashews and a nice fruity finish with the apricots. THC flavor was present but mild, as was the heat from the cayenne, which I hardly could notice. I should note that I like spicy food and have a tolerance for it, so you might notice the cayenne more than I did. Atlas describes it as promoting positivity, functionality and creativity.

The Nimbus Hybrid product suggests it will promote balance, mindfulness and playfulness. It has a pleasant dark chocolate smell with some of the THC coming through. The taste is the same oat-y, sweet nut and fruit flavor as the other Atlas products. The pecan and hazelnut flavors come in behind the chocolate, oat & honey taste. There is a definite cannabis taste but it is mild and quite well balanced with the other flavors, so the taste is neither medicinal nor absent.

Dosing

It was confusing for me that they called the pieces inside “clusters” a cluster can be a single square or the four squares stuck together could also be a cluster. From just reading the dosing information on the outside I could not tell what I would find inside. Once I opened the package I found four square pieces stuck together with a silicone bag stuck to the bottom of one of the squares.

I had to re-read the instructions and was still confused because the graphic shows one square cut in half, so did that mean half of the four squares stuck together should be cut in half to make what they called a “cluster”? I decided that since there were 80mg in the package, that must mean there were four pieces, each with 20mg, so I pulled apart the four squares.

Atlas Sativa Ember pkg clusters

Atlas Edibles’ Sativa Ember edible fresh from the package

For my usual test dose of 10mg I cut one of the squares in half. Cutting one of the squares in half required a sharp knife since they are dense and there are nuts inside. It cut cleanly in half. My usual 10 mg dose was just right for this product as I found it strong and potent.

Effects

Ember – I took a 10 mg dose of the Sativa edible on a half-empty stomach in the late morning with coffee and I could feel it within 45 minutes. Within an hour I had the full effect of energy and focus. I had so much energy I felt like I could scrub the driveway with a toothbrush if I had to! Luckily I only had usual weekend chores and some cooking to do, so it was perfect.

I had a strong munchie effect from this edible. Since it is strong it likely impacts the blood sugar in a strong way too, so be sure to have your favorite liquids and snacks around.

Nimbus – I took a 10mg dose with my breakfast coffee, pairing it with a piece of bacon to provide the fat that edibles need. I started to feel the effects in less than an hour. Like the Ember product, this one is also potent and delivers a pleasantly noticeable effect. I experienced a clear-headed high, with some energy from the sativa effects and a solid relaxing effect on the body. This wasn’t a foggy-headed or lethargic high that comes with some hybrids that are indica-dominant.

Stokes Micros Cannabis Infused Candies Review

by Alton

Micros from Stokes Confections are small candies with 5mg of THC that come 20 mints to a bottle for a total of 100mg. They come in Mint (Sativa), Watermelon (Hybrid), Tangerine Cream (Hybrid) and Honey Lemon Ginger (Indica).

I always prefer edibles that indicate if they Sativa, Indica or a Hybrid and I find it most helpful when they list the strain used to make the oil. I appreciate the Micros indicating what type of cannabis used so I can better anticipate the effects.

The mints are tiny and the pill bottle container is small, so these are easily portable and discrete. Regrettably there is a lot of wasted space in the container. I understand edible makers have to make compromises when dealing with the regulations for child-proof containers and I wish there were smaller packaging that met requirements.

Sotkes Micros Hand

Taste

The Mint Micros smell minty, if a little chalky, and taste pretty much the same. There is a strong mint oil flavor, not much THC flavor and just a hint of a chalky taste. These are sugar free so don’t expect them to be sweet, they just taste like mint without being sweet or sour. Mint is a flavor I like and it has a natural sweetness so I didn’t feel I was missing anything.

If you don’t chew them, they take a good 5 minutes to dissolve in the mouth. The effects begin within an hour for me, with full effect around the 90 minute mark.

Effects

A small canister of Stokes Micros Mint candy with 6 mints.

Stokes Mint Micros (Sativa) Cannabis edible.

These are potent little mints. I took my usual dose of 10mg one afternoon and the Sativa effect was able to break right through my usual mid-afternoon lack of energy. I found the effects were uplifting, energizing and focused – exactly what I would expect from a Sativa edible. I was able to get more accomplished than in a typical late afternoon.

While these are not my favorite edible in terms of taste, I really like the effects, so they will be a part of my edibles cabinet.

Altus Labs Indica Cannabis THC 5 mg Pills Review

White bottle of Altus THC Indica pills. Cannabis edibles.

Altus Indica pills 5 mg THC

By Ruth

I’ve spent most of my life as a discreet marijuana user. When I use outside of the home, I’m always conscious of my surroundings and the safety to smoke. As I start to rethink smoking pot, I am turning more towards edibles. When I first heard about Altus Indica THC pills I was intrigued by the ability to ingest cannabis so conveniently.

Altus pills come in 5 mg doses. Perfect for micro dosing! However, I am not a micro doser. Since it was the first time trying THC pills, I was concerned about the strength. (Would it be stronger than what I am used to? Would I get too high?) So, I took a smaller than regular amount, just to be safe.

Be conservative and follow packaging instructions when first trying THC pills. They were small tablets and easy to swallow with no bitter aftertaste.

After an hour, I felt a mild, heady buzz. I was still active and moving around the house. However, after an hour and a half, I felt a nice, full body high. I settled down and relaxed. The chair was my friend.

The pills gave me the munchies. So be prepared! Have your favorite, healthy snacks available.

I love the idea of cannabis in pill form. As the marijuana industry expands and the edible market increases, we’ll see more companies offering THC pills. For now, Altus is ahead of their market and offering strain specific Indica and Sativa varieties.

For convenience, discretion and strength, Altus THC pills are worth purchasing and enjoying. They are a great addition to the Cannabis Lover’s medicine cabinet.

Periodic Edibles Artisan Cannabis Caramels

By Alton

Periodic Edibles makes three cannabis-infused caramels, an Indica, a Sativa and a CBD formulation. Not only are they type-specific (Indica/Sativa/CBD), which I love, they are also strain specific which I love even more! Each piece is labeled with exactly what strain of marijuana was used to make the caramel. The strain is indicated on the jars and packaging. Sometimes the farm is indicated as well. I tested a Sativa batch made with Cindy 99 (aka Cinderella 99) and an Indica batch made with Obama Kush. The CBD formula has 35mg of CBD and 20mg of THC. The Indica and Sativa caramels both have 50mg of THC.

Periodic Caramel Pieces

The flavor reminds me of other cannabis caramels, with a pronounced THC oil taste. The taste is not medicinal or alcohol-like but you can taste the cannabutter in a pronounced way. The caramel is well made with a good cream and salt taste. This is made with butter and milk, so it is not suitable for vegans. The flavor was fine but I’m not a big fan of the taste overall. I did see on the website they have made a caramel apple flavor and an Indica lavender caramel, both of which sound great.

The product comes as one large caramel. The package does come with an indicator on the wrapping to help you divide the caramel into 5mg serving sizes. Since the product is small (2 inches) I found it a little difficult to match the wrapper indicator with the knife, so I ended up with 8 pieces instead of 10, making for a dose size of 6.25mg for each piece. I wish there was some way for the manufacturer to score the caramels to make them easier to split into doses. Once I had cut mine up and put them in the fridge for a 30 minutes, they split nicely into individual pieces. While they do hold their shape without refrigeration, I would plan to keep these in the refrigerator both to keep them fresh and to make them easier to handle as they can get sticky and gooey when it is warm.

Periodic Caramels Whole

As I always advise folks, I started with a small dose, taking one of the 6.25mg pieces. My usual dose is 10mg of THC so I expected to feel about 3/4 of the usual effects. I was surprised that after an hour I did not feel much. As I approached two hours without much effect, I took another piece, taking the dose up to 12.5mg. After 45 minutes I began to feel the effects. I took them as usual with coffee and a regular sized breakfast that included some fat to help the THC metabolize. What effects we experience from edibles can vary with what we have eaten, other chemicals in our systems, etc. For some reason I did not feel a strong energetic effect from this Sativa edible. Likely this is due to it being made with a Sativa hybrid. Leafly describes Cinderella 99 as being known “for a potent cerebral high…dreamy, euphoric, and uplifting”. I did find it dreamy, with a more spacey head than other sativa edibles. I did find it uplifting but not energetic, so for me this is something I would rather use in the afternoon or evening than in the morning. I did not get the effects I was expecting for a Sativa, but now I know the effects of this strain and I can use it at a more appropriate time. I am happy to exchange my expectations for the ability to find exactly the effects I desire from particular strains.

Periodic Caramels Strain

The Obama Kush used in the Indica caramel is a strain with effects that are unusual for an Indica. Leafly describes it like this: “Obama Kush sets itself apart from other indicas through its cerebral stimulation and euphoric rush. This strain is recommended for all levels of patients looking for a balanced experience, as it offers powerful physical effects as well as an intense cerebral uplift that does not stimulate appetite or put you to sleep.” So if you were hoping this Indica edible would put you to sleep, you would likely be disappointed.

This is a good reminder of the benefits of strain-specific edibles, as you can find strains that have combinations of effects that are more customized to a person’s needs. Rather than an Indica that helps you relax but puts you to sleep, you can find an Indica that helps you relax but you remain alert. Or instead of a focused, energetic high from a Sativa, you might prefer a dreamy, uplifting Sativa effect.

Made in Oregon and only available in that state as of May 2018.

Salted caramels are my favorite. So I was really excited to try Periodic Sea Salt Caramels in the Sativa strain.

I prefer to eat caramel at room temperature so it’s gooey. Periodic Sea Salt Caramels are made with quality ingredients and they taste great. There is a medicinal taste to this cannabis edible, but it’s not off putting.

The dosing was eyeballing a cutting pattern on the wrapper. It’s not ideal.

After 45 minutes I felt an upbeat, energetic high. I definitely felt an elevation of spirits, it was lovely.

And brief.

The high that had me laughing and enjoying great company ended in about another 45 minutes. Then I was practically stone cold sober.

I loved the taste, it has a great heady high feeling, but it was very brief. I wish the buzz lasted longer.

Valhalla Cannabis Infused Gummies- Sour Watermelon Indica Review

Valhalla indica Watermelon GummiesBy Alton

Valhalla Cannabis Infused Sour Watermelon gummies are some of the best out there. They come in a package of 10 pieces with each piece containing 10 mg of THC and .4 mg of CBD. These Indica strain gummies taste great, with minimal medicinal taste.

After 40 minutes I started feeling the tingly sensation of an early high. I was still running around cleaning the house. After and hour and 15 minutes, I was sitting back enjoying a calm, full body high. That’s where I stayed for about an hour and 45 minutes more. It was lovely. I also noted that my hands that suffer arthritis- like symptoms were pain free.

Be warned, this edible creates serious munchies. Have a lot of healthy snacks available!

These are great gummies. I like that they don’t have a extra coat of sugar. They’re powerful! Valhalla cannabis infused gummies are highly recommended!
