Zoots ZootRocks Cannabis Infused Caramel Nuggets

ZootRocks Caramel

By Ruth

Zoots Rocks Caramel Premium Cannabis Infused Nuggets were recommended by my budtender at my local dispensary this week. This marijuana edible comes in 5 mg of THC doses. Zoots Rocks are suckers, they’re not chewy like caramel. They’re light small, flat cough drops that taste pretty good. They have a buttery caramel flavor with just the hint of medicinal taste.

After sucking on the Zoots Rocks, I started to feel high in an hour and in another half an hour I was happily buzzed. The high was uplifting and energizing. The effects were really enjoyable. I was productive and my attitude was upbeat. I really liked these Caramels.

There are a few edibles out on the market like Highly Edibles Watermelon Pucks and Zoots Rocks Caramel Nuggets that offer a euphoric buzz. I highly recommend Zoots Rocks. They are super convenient and provide a consistent, pleasant buzz.

by Alton

To me Zoots have quite a pronounced THC flavor plus some caramel taste. This isn’t a product that tries to hide the THC taste underneath artificial flavors. I am used to that flavor so I don’t find it unpleasant and it blends well with the caramel. From the website “Caramel ZootRocks are gluten free. ZootRocks are handmade from naturally sourced ingredients and contain no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.” The caramel flavor contains dairy and is sweetened with Isomalt and Stevia.

I tried Zoots several times and initially I just found them okay. As always with new edibles, I tried half my usual dose before trying a full dose. I got almost no effect from half a dose. I tried a full dose two times and both times I didn’t feel much impact. Trusting Ruth as I do, I tried them again to see if it was just coincidence that they did not make a big impression on me at first. It’s a good reminder that, since so many things influence the effects from edibles, give them several tries with different levels of food in your system, making sure you eat something with some fat in it so the THC can bind to it, like an avocado or some nuts. I’m glad I tried again as the third time was the charm.

Zootrocks candies and a man paiting

I agree with Ruth that these have a strong uplifting, happy effect. I was alert and able to function well, felt comfortable in social situations, enjoyed food immensely and generally felt good. The impact lasted for a good 5 hours, and even lingered in a milder way after that. I always prefer when edibles provide an indication of effects, either by labeling products as Indica or Sativa or sharing the name of the cannabis strain used in production. I’d love to know what strain or strains Zoots is using.

Overall a solid cannabis edible that is small and durable enough to bring hiking. Zoots provides a happy, uplifting and creative effect that is what you want when looking for the euphoric THC effect.

As of August 2018, available only in Colorado and Washington.

Medicine Box Cannabis Medicine Bar Review

by Alton

Medicine Box makes strain-specific products including chocolate truffles, tinctures and my favorite, the Medicine Bar. It’s a sweet nutty treat with the energizing effects I like.
Each bar contains 20mg of THC, so since I usually get the best effects from 10mg, I can get two doses out of one bar.

Medicine Box medicine bars

These are a hard, crunchy nut bar, so you do want to be careful if you are cutting them into pieces. Biting one in half isn’t too hard and I wouldn’t try to cut it into more than 4 pieces as it could start to fall apart. If you are new to this edible, do start with cutting it into 4 pieces and try a 5mg dose first. Wait 2 hours to judge the effects then try more if you want a stronger effect.

I love this bar because it not only tastes great, Medicine Bar gives me strain-specific effects from the Sativa strain Sour Diesel. Sour Diesel aka Sour D is used to make the cannabis oil that goes into the bars. Sour D has a very energizing and focusing effect that helps power me through chores, housework or a hike in the woods. Add to that they are  handmade in California’s Sierra Mountains and vegan, it adds up to a winning cannabis edible.

Medicine Box ingredients

For fans of smoky flavors, the Smoked Almond bar has almonds, sunflower seeds and flax seeds. The Curry bar is spiced with classic curry spices, cashews, pistachios and chickpeas. My personal favorite is the Spiced Peanut bar, since I like spicy food, peanuts  and pumpkin seeds.

I have found these to be one of the most energetic of the edibles I have tried. Happy, uplifting and energetic are all appropriate to describe the effects.

Like many edibles producers, they have had to rework their packaging to comply with the new rules for edibles in California. While they are currently dealing with meeting the new packaging and licensing requirements, they are alive and well.

Highly Edible Cannabis Watermelon Pucks with NXT Review

By Ruth

The first time I tried Highly Edible Watermelon Pucks was on a wonderful day hanging with a dear friend at an amazing spa. Ideal! It was a great mood-lifting edible and I knew right away I would have to enjoy them again and that I had to take notes for a review.

highly-edible-watermelon-pucks.jpgThese gummies come in a little more than 10 mg of THC per piece and there are ten pieces per container. The pucks are bigger than your average gummies. The candy piece is like if two and a half gummy bears were melted together and put into a one inch disc mold. Watermelon Pucks taste good, not too sour, not too medicinal.

After eating the cannabis candy it took approximately 45 minutes for effects to set in. Highly Edible Watermelon Pucks have a steady, energetic high. My mood definitely felt lighter, happier. I was able to communicate with angst ridden teenagers with success while at the same time was still completely mobile and able to finish the tasks I had planned for the day.

I did get the munchies. So be warned. Have healthy food and drinks available!

The high lasted a solid 2 1/2 hours and left me feeling great with energy and not lethargic.

I will definitely be using Highly Edible Watermelon Pucks again. They are probably my favorite gummy on the market. The buzz and mood uplift are amazing. Highly recommended. Highly.

This edible was recommended to me by a good friend and I was happy to try them on a visit to Colorado. I thought they tasted great and for me the effect was an uplifting, happy one. I rarely get the giggles from being high, but I had a touch of them on these pucks!

These edibles claim to have faster absorption because of what the label refers to as NXT –  “Feel it faster with NXT extraction technology”. Nowhere on the bottle does it detail what that technolgy is or how it works. Also a search of the website brought up no results for NXT. On a dispensary website I found this – “…with their new Nano eXtraction Technology (NXT), these gummies pack a powerful punch. The NXT system lets you feel it faster by allowing tiny THC molecules to absorb sublingually. You feel it faster and longer as your stomach metabolizes the THC buried within the gummy.” If you are interested in more there is some explanation from a company that makes the “nano extractor” here.

Highly Edible PucksWatermelon is just one of the flavors, which include peach, cherry, assorted fruity and golden strawberry. They are vegan and gluten free. As with other of this brands products, there is no mention of which type of cannabis (Indica, Hybrid, Sativa) or which strain (Blue Dream, Kush, etc.) to guide consumers on what effects to expect. From the effects we experienced we are guessing it is a Sativa dominant hybrid.

These gummies come from the folks at Cannapunch, who also make CannaPunch drinks and Dutch Girl Stroopwafels (our review here).

Kikoko Cannabis Infused Organic Teas Review

Kikiko has a line of four tasty teas that deliver various combinations of THC, CBD and CBN. Each one is formulated to deliver specific effects, as their names indicate: Tranquili-Tea, Positivi-Tea, Sympa-Tea and Sensuali-Tea.

Kikoko TeaTranquili-Tea is for relaxing and to help  you sleep, with 5mg of CBN and 3mg of THC. Positivi-Tea is for mood lifting and pain relieving effects with 10mg THC and 5 mg CBD. Sympa-Tea is for pain management and anxiety relief with 3mg of THC and 20mg of CBD. Sensuali-Tea is described as being “for passion and play” on the website, with 7mg of THC.

Kikoko uses organic ingredients and high quality cannabis in their products, so they are a premium product. This creates a price point per dose that is higher than the average edible or beverage. I am frugal so I usually re-use the teabag once. The label clearly says that there is no increase in potency after one minute and that these are single use teabags, but they have enough good flavors that they make a nice second cup of tea even if it doesn’t deliver any cannabis effects.

Tranquili-Tea

Tranquili Tea KikokoThe Tranquili-Tea works very well. About 45 minutes after a cup in the evening I start to feel very relaxed, after an hour I usually feel like heading to bed. I am able to fall asleep easily and stay asleep. If I do get up it is not hard to get back to sleep. I sometimes feel a little something different in the morning, but too slight to call it a hangover, let’s call it a fuzziness that dissipates quickly. I especially love the tastes of peppermint, camomile, lemon myrtle and licorice root that come across without a medicinal taste. I had a friend who has gone through cans and cans of these as he has trouble sleeping and they work like a charm for him.

Ruth is a tea drinker and really likes the taste of Tranquli-Tea. It’s THC dose is low, but she definitely felt the calming effects of the Indica cannabis. She would surely recommend their use as part of an evening wind down routine.

Positivi-Tea

Positivi-Tea KikokoPositivi-Tea has the most THC of any of the Kikoko teas at 10mg. Due to that dosage, this tea has the strongest THC flavor of any of the teas we have tried. It is still barely noticeable and does not make the tea taste bad or medicinal. You have to like mint flavors if you want to like this tea as it has both peppermint and spearmint in it. Ruth is not a fan of peppermint, so this is not a taste she likes. Alton has fond memories of having tried teas in Amsterdam, so he was excited to try this.

While we usually take some caffeine with our edibles, the green tea in this product provides a good amount of caffeine to help boost the effect. Instead of having an edible with breakfast, Alton had this tea along with a medium sized breakfast. Started to feel the effects in a mild way in about an hour, which is longer than usual. Everyone is different and reacts differently to different products. Be aware that these may take longer to have the effects felt than other edibles/drinkables, so be patient when waiting for the effects.

After two hours Alton was only feeling a mild effect, not what he usually expects from a 10mg dose. The effect was noticeable, just weak. So many things effect how we respond on different days like the type and amount of food in our system. Whatever the reason, after two hours he felt he wanted a stronger effect so he augmented it with Mary’s Medicinals THC Transdermal Pen for a boost. The boost helped temporarily but soon he was back to only a mild effect. His experience is that this product is good for people who want a mild effect from a 10mg dose. It isn’t strong enough for him to use without boosting it with something else.

We will review the other two products in a separate post in the near future.

Atlas Medicinal Cannabis Edibles Review

Atlas edibles are a hybrid of a granola bar, a fruit/oat bar and a cookie. They come in Sativa, Indica and two different Hybrid formulations. Each bag contains 80mg of THC. There are four pieces in each bag, each piece contains 20mg of THC. They are colorfully packaged, interestingly flavored and cleverly named.

Products

The two hybrid products are Stratus and Nimbus. Stratus promotes mindfulness & playfulness. It is flavored with lemon caramel, wild blueberries, poppy seeds and a hint of ginger. Nimbus is the other Hybrid flavor, having the same effects as Status but flavored with dark chocolate, hazelnuts, pecans and currants.

The Indica edible, which promotes relaxation, is flavored with Mexican chocolate, warm spices and pumpkin seeds. They call it Origin.

Atlas Sativa Ember clusters

Ember edible

The Sativa edible is called Ember and it promotes functionality and creativity. It’s flavored with caramel, cayenne, toasted cashews and California apricots. If you are sensitive to spicy, don’t be put off because I love spicy and I hardly noticed any heat when I tried it, so it’s a mellow heat offset by the nuts and apricots. It is vegetarian and almost vegan (if your vegan eats honey) with the cannabis infused in coconut oil.

Ember has a pleasant oat bar/moist cookie taste with some crunch from the cashews and a nice fruity finish with the apricots. THC flavor was present but mild, as was the heat from the cayenne, which I hardly could notice. I should note that I like spicy food and have a tolerance for it, so you might notice the cayenne more than I did. Atlas describes it as promoting positivity, functionality and creativity.

The Nimbus Hybrid product suggests it will promote balance, mindfulness and playfulness. It has a pleasant dark chocolate smell with some of the THC coming through. The taste is the same oat-y, sweet nut and fruit flavor as the other Atlas products. The pecan and hazelnut flavors come in behind the chocolate, oat & honey taste. There is a definite cannabis taste but it is mild and quite well balanced with the other flavors, so the taste is neither medicinal nor absent.

Dosing

It was confusing for me that they called the pieces inside “clusters” a cluster can be a single square or the four squares stuck together could also be a cluster. From just reading the dosing information on the outside I could not tell what I would find inside. Once I opened the package I found four square pieces stuck together with a silicone bag stuck to the bottom of one of the squares.

I had to re-read the instructions and was still confused because the graphic shows one square cut in half, so did that mean half of the four squares stuck together should be cut in half to make what they called a “cluster”? I decided that since there were 80mg in the package, that must mean there were four pieces, each with 20mg, so I pulled apart the four squares.

Atlas Sativa Ember pkg clusters

Atlas Edibles’ Sativa Ember edible fresh from the package

For my usual test dose of 10mg I cut one of the squares in half. Cutting one of the squares in half required a sharp knife since they are dense and there are nuts inside. It cut cleanly in half. My usual 10 mg dose was just right for this product as I found it strong and potent.

Effects

Ember – I took a 10 mg dose of the Sativa edible on a half-empty stomach in the late morning with coffee and I could feel it within 45 minutes. Within an hour I had the full effect of energy and focus. I had so much energy I felt like I could scrub the driveway with a toothbrush if I had to! Luckily I only had usual weekend chores and some cooking to do, so it was perfect.

I had a strong munchie effect from this edible. Since it is strong it likely impacts the blood sugar in a strong way too, so be sure to have your favorite liquids and snacks around.

Nimbus – I took a 10mg dose with my breakfast coffee, pairing it with a piece of bacon to provide the fat that edibles need. I started to feel the effects in less than an hour. Like the Ember product, this one is also potent and delivers a pleasantly noticeable effect. I experienced a clear-headed high, with some energy from the sativa effects and a solid relaxing effect on the body. This wasn’t a foggy-headed or lethargic high that comes with some hybrids that are indica-dominant.
