Sensi Chew Insomnia Cannabis THC & CBD Chocolate Caramels Review

Sensi Chew’s Insomnia product has 10 doses of cannabis-infused chocolate caramels. Each dose has 10mg of THC plus 2mg of melatonin to aid in getting to sleep and staying asleep. The Insomnia Plus product has no THC, just CBD and melatonin.

If you are sensitive to the effects of melatonin and of Indica strains of cannabis, these products pack a punch. Even the description on the website says “Those who are new to or have a low tolerance with medicated edibles should proceed slowly” – listen to that advice.

Taste & Ingredients

Like the other Sensi Chew products, this edible is a chocolate caramel confection that does a good job of hiding the THC taste. If you are not a fan of the taste of cannabis oil, this is good product for you to try, as the taste is on the mild side. The Plus product has no THC so it has no cannabis taste. This edible is usually described as having a “tootsie-roll” type flavor and Sensi Chews have a similar consistency as those treats.

I like that Sensi Chew has a short ingredient list and that everything is something your grandmother might use in making treats (except maybe the cannabis extract, depending on your grandmother). They are not full of chemicals and fillers. They do contain dairy so they are not an option for those who avoid dairy, be it for allergy, by choice, because of being a vegan and cruelty-free or any other reason.

Effects & Dosing

Usually within 30-45 minutes of taking one of these I begin to feel sleepy. I am sensitive to melatonin and each dose has 2mg of it per dose along with either 10mg of THC or CBD. Once the effects begin to set in, I am able to get ready for bed and I last about another 30 minutes before my eyes are too heavy to keep open. I would not take more than my usual does of one 10mg THC piece as I find the effects are strong enough.

Sometimes I do experience something of a groggy feeling in the morning, which I don’t like. I experience that with several other types of sleep aids, so I think it is the melatonin. I prefer to wake up refreshed and not groggy. I am fortunate that insomnia is only an occasional issue so I don’t usual use a sleep aid. Folks who are more tolerant of melatonin, might not have the grogginess. I don’t have it every time, but close to half the time when I use products like this.

These are a solid sleep aid and I like that they are not knock-out pills. While I was sleeping the electricity went out and woke me up, but I was able to get back to sleep – until it came back on and woke me up again. Still I was able to go back to sleep.

I didn’t have dreams that were any more bizarre than usual and I didn’t sleep eat or sleep drive like some sleeping pills make you do.

Wrap Up

If you have problems getting to sleep or staying asleep, I would recommend giving Sensi Chew Insomnia or Plus formulas a try. If you find you experience the grogginess, experiment with half or a quarter of a 10mg dose, to see if that reduces the impact.

Sensi Chew Energy Cannabis Chocolate Caramel Review

Before adult use of cannabis was legal in California, as a medical marijuana user, SensiChew was one of my favorite edibles. Especially their Energy product, which had a good 50mg dose of caffeine that boosted the positive effects of the THC. Now with new state regulations, they have adjusted the formulas. Thankfully the great taste and powerful effects remain in the new formulas.

Formula

Sensi Chew come in various formulas for specific effects. Sativa for daytime, Indica for nighttime/insomnia and hybrid for anytime. There are also specific CBD formulas for pain and an aphrodisiac formula for “amoré”.

Sensi Chew newer formula of their Energy product is labeled as anti-fatigue and has 40mg of natural Ginseng per dose. The website says “Sensi Chew Energy 100 mg is for patients with pain, who want to medicate and be alert, and have a THC tolerance.” I agree, these edibles are not appropriate for people who are new to edibles who may have little thc tolerance. I have a lot of experience and a healthy tolerance yet I still find these strong.

Sensi Chews are made with natural ingredients that you would use to make caramel at home. There are not lots of chemicals or ingredients you’ve never heard of. They do contain butter, so they are not suitable for vegans.

Sensi Chew Multiple

Taste & Dosing

All of the Sensi Chews have a smooth chocolatey-caramel flavor that reminds one of the tootsie-roll candies. There is not a strong cannabis flavor as it is well balanced with the chocolate and caramel flavors.  I wondered if the ginseng would alter the flavor, but I didn’t taste any other flavors. They recommend letting a piece dissolve sublingually – under the tongue – for faster onset.

Sensichew Cannabis Infused chocolate caramel ENERGY bar 100mg of thc and 40mg of ginseng per dose

The full 100mg bar comes scored to make it pretty easy to break into 10 pieces of 10mg each. It is caramel, so it is a bit stretchy and sticky. Putting this in the fridge or freezer for a little while before cutting it makes for cleaner cuts. It also makes it harder to cut than when at room temperature, so always take care and cut safely.

As always if you are new to a cannabis edible, only take half of your usual dose the first time. I am a seasoned edible user and I find these strong, so it is easy to over do it with these. Proceed with caution. If you have never tried edibles and are starting with these, first cut off one piece (10mg), then cut that 10mg piece into four pieces so you have four 2.5mg pieces. Start with one of those small pieces and wait two hours to notice the effects. You can always take more but you can’t take less.

My usual dose is 10mg and I took 5 mg first. I definitely noticed the effects and they were mild enough that I went up to 7.5mg another time and then another day went up to 10mg. My usual dose is plenty for these edibles. Again, start low and slow with these as they are potent.

Effects

The effects are what you would expect from a Sativa-dominant hybrid. There is an energy boost, likely supported by the ginseng, that is pronounced without being overbearing. These are very strong, so I could see how taking more than my usual dose could give an over-revved, too hyper feeling.

I did let it dissolve under my tongue and felt the energy boost first, about 45 mins after taking it, with the full effects coming on around 90 minutes after ingestion. As with most edibles, your body chemistry and the contents of your stomach will impact the effects. Having a cup of coffee and a little bit of fat like an avocado half with the edible will usually create a much stronger effect than if you ate a big breakfast with no caffeine and then took the edible.

I really enjoy the effects of these edibles, a clear head, focus, energy and some pain relief body effects as well. I am very sensitive to Indica-type effects of cannabis such as relaxation or tiredness. I did notice with these, since they are made for pain relief, that after a couple of hours it does become more of a body-focused relaxed high as the energy effects fade.

Periodic Edibles Artisan Cannabis Caramels

By Ruth

Salted caramels are my favorite. So I was really excited to try Periodic Sea Salt Caramels in the Sativa strain.

I prefer to eat caramel at room temperature so it’s gooey. Periodic Sea Salt Caramels are made with quality ingredients and they taste great. There is a medicinal taste to this cannabis edible, but it’s not off putting.

The dosing was eyeballing a cutting pattern on the wrapper. It’s not ideal.

After 45 minutes I felt an upbeat, energetic high. I definitely felt an elevation of spirits, it was lovely. And brief.

The high that had me laughing and enjoying great company ended in about another 45 minutes. Then I was practically stone cold sober.

I loved the taste, it has a great heady high feeling, but it was very brief. I wish the buzz lasted longer.

By Alton

Periodic Edibles makes three cannabis-infused caramels, an Indica, a Sativa and a CBD formulation. Not only are they type-specific (Indica/Sativa/CBD), which I love, they are also strain specific which I love even more! Each piece is labeled with exactly what strain of marijuana was used to make the caramel. The strain is indicated on the jars and packaging. Sometimes the farm is indicated as well. I tested a Sativa batch made with Cindy 99 (aka Cinderella 99) and an Indica batch made with Obama Kush. The CBD formula has 35mg of CBD and 20mg of THC. The Indica and Sativa caramels both have 50mg of THC.

Periodic Caramel Pieces

The flavor reminds me of other cannabis caramels, with a pronounced THC oil taste. The taste is not medicinal or alcohol-like but you can taste the cannabutter in a pronounced way. The caramel is well made with a good cream and salt taste. This is made with butter and milk, so it is not suitable for vegans. The flavor was fine but I’m not a big fan of the taste overall. I did see on the website they have made a caramel apple flavor and an Indica lavender caramel, both of which sound great.

The product comes as one large caramel. The package does come with an indicator on the wrapping to help you divide the caramel into 5mg serving sizes. Since the product is small (2 inches) I found it a little difficult to match the wrapper indicator with the knife, so I ended up with 8 pieces instead of 10, making for a dose size of 6.25mg for each piece. I wish there was some way for the manufacturer to score the caramels to make them easier to split into doses. Once I had cut mine up and put them in the fridge for a 30 minutes, they split nicely into individual pieces. While they do hold their shape without refrigeration, I would plan to keep these in the refrigerator both to keep them fresh and to make them easier to handle as they can get sticky and gooey when it is warm.

Periodic Caramels Whole

As I always advise folks, I started with a small dose, taking one of the 6.25mg pieces. My usual dose is 10mg of THC so I expected to feel about 3/4 of the usual effects. I was surprised that after an hour I did not feel much. As I approached two hours without much effect, I took another piece, taking the dose up to 12.5mg. After 45 minutes I began to feel the effects. I took them as usual with coffee and a regular sized breakfast that included some fat to help the THC metabolize. What effects we experience from edibles can vary with what we have eaten, other chemicals in our systems, etc. For some reason I did not feel a strong energetic effect from this Sativa edible. Likely this is due to it being made with a Sativa hybrid. Leafly describes Cinderella 99 as being known “for a potent cerebral high…dreamy, euphoric, and uplifting”. I did find it dreamy, with a more spacey head than other sativa edibles. I did find it uplifting but not energetic, so for me this is something I would rather use in the afternoon or evening than in the morning. I did not get the effects I was expecting for a Sativa, but now I know the effects of this strain and I can use it at a more appropriate time. I am happy to exchange my expectations for the ability to find exactly the effects I desire from particular strains.

Periodic Caramels Strain

The Obama Kush used in the Indica caramel is a strain with effects that are unusual for an Indica. Leafly describes it like this: “Obama Kush sets itself apart from other Indicas through its cerebral stimulation and euphoric rush. This strain is recommended for all levels of patients looking for a balanced experience, as it offers powerful physical effects as well as an intense cerebral uplift that does not stimulate appetite or put you to sleep.” So if you were hoping this Indica edible would put you to sleep, you would likely be disappointed.

This is a good reminder of the benefits of strain-specific edibles, as you can find strains that have combinations of effects that are more customized to a person’s needs. Rather than an Indica that helps you relax but puts you to sleep, you can find an Indica that helps you relax but you remain alert. Or instead of a focused, energetic high from a Sativa, you might prefer a dreamy, uplifting Sativa effect.

Made in Oregon and only available in that state as of May 2018.
